On a budget and need a printer that is not only affordable but also compact and reliable? Check out the HL-L2300D, then. The printer has a small footprint, making it a good personal printer in just about any office. It prints well and fast, too.
Want to get to know more about it? Just read on. In this post, we review the HL-L2300D design and build, setup and usability, and pros & cons. We also have a list of operating systems compatible with the Brother HL-L2300D driver.
1. Brother HL-L2300D Design and Build
Design-wise, the HL-L2300D is as basic as printers go. It is boxy with rounded corners. But if functionality is your primary concern, the basic look is a non-issue. The device is desk-friendly, having dimensions of only 14 x 14.2 x 7 inches and weighing no more than 15 lbs.
At the front, there is the main paper tray that can accommodate as many as 250 sheets. The tray is adjustable and can handle Legal and Letter paper sizes. There is also a rear paper exit and a manual feed slot, which makes duplex printing easy.
In terms of buttons, the HL-L2300D is rather minimalist. It has only a power button, a green “Go” button, and four status lights. Controlling and setting up are done via the supplied software.
Note that the HL-L2300D is meant to be a personal printer. Not surprisingly, it supports USB only connection. Indeed, Ethernet and Wi-Fi wireless setup is not supported. Plus, you have to provide your own USB cable, too.

2. Brother HL-L2300D Setup and Usability
The setup of the HL-L2300D is easy. You just need to connect the device to a computer via USB and install the Brother HL-L2300D driver from the installation disc.
Alternatively, you can download the driver installer on the HL-L2300D support page on Brother’s official website. On the page, you can also find other supporting software as well as the user manual.
Using the driver, you can select various print options. The options include the ability to select the quality of the print output (300 dpi, 600 dpi, or 2,400 x 600 dpi) the ability to reduce paper curl, and Toner Save Mode. You can also use it to choose single- or double-sided printing.
The printer is very usable. For single-sided printing, it can go as fast as 27 pages per minute for Letter size paper and 26 pages per minute for A4 size paper. For double-sided printing, up to 6.5 sheets per minute for Letter or A4 size paper. Quite impressive for its price.
What about the print quality? Overall, the print quality is decent. Text quality is good enough for just about any business use. That is, unless you need to print small fonts. Graphics quality is acceptable for any internal business use. It is not good enough for PowerPoint handouts or similar needs, though.
As for photo quality, it produces results you’d expect from a monochrome laser printer. The HL-L2300D can print recognizable images from web pages, but don’t expect anything more.
